Empower Your Nursing Career with GHC
Are you a Registered Nurse (RN) aspiring to advance your career? The Group Health Centre (GHC) is excited to introduce the Grow Your Own Nurse Practitioner (GYONP) Program, designed to support and guide RNs on their journey to becoming Nurse Practitioners (NPs).
Why Become a Nurse Practitioner?
Nurse Practitioners are vital members of the healthcare team, providing direct patient care, focusing on health promotion, treatment, and management of health conditions.
At GHC, we recognize the invaluable contributions of NPs and are committed to expanding our NP team to enhance primary care in our community.
Our Vision
The GHC Grow Your Own Nurse Practitioner Program aims to:
- Support RNs in their educational and professional journey to become NPs.
- Create a robust pipeline of skilled NPs to fill critical roles within GHC.
- Promote the essential role of NPs in delivering primary care.
- Increase community access to primary care by ensuring more patients have a dedicated Primary Care Provider.
Program Eligibility
Eligible RNs can apply at two stages:
- Upon acceptance as a full-time student in a CNO-recognized post-graduate Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Education Program.
- When entering the second year as a full-time student in the same program.
Applicants must agree to a return of service agreement with GHC as a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and remain enrolled full-time, completing the program within two years.
What We Offer
- Full-Time Employment: Secure permanent full-time employment with competitive salary and benefits as per the ONA collective agreement.
- Education Support: Time to attend classes and complete studies. During breaks between semesters, RNs will be assigned work that supports their learning, including assisting with various primary care clinics and supporting Primary Care Providers.
- Transition to NP Role: Upon successful completion of the program and achieving NP licensing, transition to a full-time Nurse Practitioner role within GHC.
Financial and Work Expectations
While GHC provides employment and valuable work experience, RNs are responsible for covering their educational costs, including tuition, supplies, travel, examination fees, and association memberships.
When enrolled in classes, the education program is the priority. During breaks between semesters, RNs will work in roles that support their primary care learning, such as assisting with various primary care clinics and supporting Primary Care Providers.
GHC understands and appreciates the workload that comes with being a full-time student. Expectations for work at GHC, while not engaged in classes or studies, will be managed through ongoing collaboration between the RN and their Manager. This approach ensures a balanced workload, primary care mentorship, and meaningful work experiences during longer durations away from class and studies.
Return of Service Commitment
Participants must fulfill a return of service agreement:
- Four Years: For RNs enrolling after acceptance into a CNO-recognized program.
- Two Years: For RNs enrolling when entering their second year in the program.
Failure to complete the return of service period will result in repayment obligations based on the duration of unfulfilled service.
Lastly, once accepted into the GHC GYONP program, the RN must remain enrolled full-time in the postgraduate Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Education Program. The RN must complete the Education Program within a 2-year timeframe. If, at any time, the RN decides to discontinue their studies and/or remove themselves from the education program for any reason, the RN will be deemed to have resigned from the GHC GYONP program.
