Spotlight – Helping Seniors Build Strength and Confidence
May 28, 2026
As we age, changes in muscle strength, joint mobility, and balance can increase the risk of falls and make everyday activities more challenging. Staying active through targeted exercise can help seniors maintain independence, improve confidence, and support overall well-being.
At Group Health Centre (GHC), our Physiotherapy Department offers specialized group exercise programs for older adults. These group-based exercise classes focus on improving strength, balance, and mobility in a safe, supportive environment, including:
- Fall Prevention
- Strength Training
Fall Prevention
This class focuses on stretching, strength, balance and posture exercises. In small groups, participants are guided through targeted exercises that challenge balance in a controlled way, helping build confidence when walking, turning or navigating uneven surfaces. Knowledgeable Physiotherapy Assistants also provide strategies to reduce the risk of falls at home and in the community.
Strength Training
This class prioritizes functional strength, building the muscles needed for everyday tasks. With 9 different stations, participants are guided through a circuit of strengthening exercises. Each exercise is adapted to different ability levels, ensuring participants can work safely at their own pace while still being appropriately challenged.
Classes are led by GHC Physiotherapy Assistants who tailor instruction to ensure exercises are safe, effective and accessible. Participants are monitored throughout sessions, and modifications are always provided as needed to accommodate different mobility levels and health conditions.
I’m so grateful for the fall prevention and strength programs offered at GHC Physio; they truly make a difference.
- GHC Physiotherapy Program Participant
The physiotherapy team has been recognized for creating a supportive environment. “The team creates a safe space where I feel comfortable asking questions and always receive thoughtful, helpful answers. These classes have given me the help I needed. I’m falling less, I have more energy, and my pain has significantly decreased.”
What makes these classes particularly valuable is the supportive group environment. Participants not only benefit from professional guidance but also from the encouragement and motivation that come from exercising alongside peers. This sense of community often becomes an important part of the experience, helping individuals stay consistent and engaged in their health goals.
Through these dedicated senior-focused programs, GHC Physiotherapy continues to support healthy aging by helping individuals remain strong, steady, and independent for as long as possible.
