GHC and SAH Among Nine Sites Across the Region Participating in Mammothon 2025

Sault Ste. Marie, ON – After a long wait, Mammothon is back! This will be the first Mammothon in the North East since 2019, and we are excited to bring this impactful screening day to communities across the region. On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Group Health Centre (GHC) and Sault Area Hospital (SAH) will participate in this special breast screening initiative aimed at screening up to 445 eligible participants across the region aged 40–74 who are overdue or have never had a mammogram.

Group Health Centre:  Wednesday, June 18, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 240 McNabb St.

Sault Area Hospital:  Wednesday, June 18, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 750 Great Northern Rd.

Through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP), this public event offers breast cancer screening to individuals aged 50 to 74 who are due but have no symptoms. All eligible individuals can self-refer and walk in to either location on June 18, no appointment or referral from a primary care provider is required.

People ages 40-49 are also eligible for breast screening and are encouraged to have a conversation with their primary care provider to help decide if screening is right for them. People without a primary care provider can call or visit Health811 for more information.

Breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer diagnosed in Canadian women and the third leading cause of cancer deaths, after lung cancer and colorectal cancer. However, fewer Canadian women are dying from breast cancer today than in the past. Breast cancer deaths have decreased by more than 40 percent due to earlier detection through breast screening and improved treatments.

“The mammogram is the most effective screening tool we have for detecting breast cancer early,” says Kim Cadham, Manager of Diagnostic Imaging at GHC. “It can detect cancer before any symptoms appear, which is why it’s so important for eligible individuals to get screened regularly. Early detection means better treatment outcomes, and the Mammothon is a great way to make that happen for as many people as possible. We look forward to welcoming individuals between the ages of 40–74 to GHC for this important event on June 18.”

“At SAH, we are deeply committed to providing outstanding care to our community, and we recognize that early detection is a critical component in the fight against breast cancer. According to Cancer Care Ontario guidance and best practices, regular breast cancer screening for individuals aged 50 to 74 is vital, as it significantly increases the chances of identifying cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages,” says Jill Kennedy, Manager of Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiac Combine. “During this event, we are more than happy to accommodate all eligible patients (including those aged 40-49), but we especially want to stress the importance of screening for those within the 50 to 74 age group. Creating as many opportunities as possible for early detection remains an integral piece of our commitment to community health and well-being.”

People may put off having a mammogram for all kinds of reasons; fear of the test and time constraints are among them, but the Mammothon has proved to be a powerful motivator. The campaign aims to address common barriers to breast screening through information, education and convenient screening hours.
